Teenage Alternative

COORDINATOR:  TERESA BAKERX

Teenage Alternative (T/A) is an after school program that Operates from September through June.

Mondays and Wednesdays.

Hours: 5:30pm. to 8:30pm.

Teenage Alternative’s main objective is to direct young men and women between the ages of 13 to 21 years, toward God.  This age group, sometimes deemed a “lost generation”, is why T/A becomes vitally necessary.

Through T/A, we are not putting in, we are bringing out the leadership that is already in them.  Teenage Alternative was created to encourage leadership skills of young people and prepare them to be productive citizens in their home and community.

Through mentoring, T/A builds trusting and nurturing relationships and provides incentives for self-motivation toward opportunities such as higher education, employment careers, and volunteerism.  The program also constructs opportunities for participants to become peer advocates of responsible and accountable living.

In addition, participants are provided with an opportunity to receive a small stipend to encourage them to work along with and aid other youth in the Kids Club program.

Program Activities Includes:

  • Workshops / Seminars

Youth Violence Prevention

Homicide has become the leading cause of death among African-American males between the ages of 13 through 25.  Violent crime is completely out of control.  It seems as if the young have lost the ability to feel, to have compassion – they have no hearts.  People are no longer safe – even in their own homes.

Many people (including city, county and state) have looked for solutions to this major problem.  After careful study and much prayer, we believe that we have found a viable and workable solution that will change the minds and hearts of people.  This youth violence prevention program is geared toward making the necessary changes in our young people.

It is broken down into two components:

1.  Block Club Basketball is geared toward bringing whole communities back together.

2.  Peer Educational Concept will train young people to become peer educators and carry the important message across the state.

Radio Broadcast

This is a ministry of information, inspiration and teaching called “Life Line” heard Sunday evenings from 7:00pm. to 7:15pm. over radio station WDCX-FM 99.5

U.C.M. Summer Camp

Youth summer camp is an exciting weeklong experience for children, and is located in Bliss, New York.  The Camp is a twenty seven year old program serving 50 to 100 children annually.  We aim for adventure, growth and commitment.  It is our goal that the spiritual impact of camp should not be limited to just devotions, Bible classes and vespers, but that the total camp day will relate the message of Christ to everyday living – by informal teaching and example.  It also has become an excellent opportunity for summer mission teams to share, learn and grow in first-hand Christian experience in a cross cultural setting.

Wilderness Trips

Wilderness trips are designed to induce survival and leadership skills of the teenagers.  In addition, they are presented with topics such as responsibility/accountability, honest living, and spirituality.

We are always looking for individuals with outdoor experience or interest to help with trips and hiking.  We run several trips each year to enable youth to experience outdoor adventure.

Some of the activities are:

  • Hiking in the Alleghany National Forest .

  • Rock climbing and repelling

  • Backpacking trips

  • Fall camping trips

  • Tenting

  • Snow-shoeing

  • Snow tubing

  • Skiing

  • Canoeing

  • Ropes course
